Riot Fest Foundation issues grant to Chicago SCORES after school programs

Posted on February 9, 2017
Riot Fest Foundation is pleased to issue a grant to Chicago SCORES, an organization that works to provide after school and summer activity programming to urban youth. Specifically, the grant will go towards two new after school programs – music and chess – that will serve up to 20 students each in grades 4-8, at Roswell Mason Elementary and Charles Hughes Elementary in North Lawndale.
“SCORES is a long-standing community partner with these and several other elementary schools in the neighborhood. We work through a federal grant called 21st Century Community Learning Centers to identify resources and implement programming and partnership opportunities. The majority of our participants – 98.7% – qualify for free or reduced lunch, are below grade level reading performance (84.3%), and attend schools with otherwise limited arts, music, and recreational programs. Neighborhood safety/community violence is also a concern in North Lawndale, so after school programs provide a safe and structured environment for participants to build academic, creative, and social skills.” – Brian Fisher, Program Coordinator
